Ok, so I'm trying this blog thing. My name is Mary. Tate publishing just released my first book. I have been a professional writer for at least a decade. Over the years, I have written for journals, weekly newspapers, dailies and, my personal favorite, online papers. My speciality is working within the community. I enjoy getting to know new people, see the behind the scenes working of cities and towns, and designing my own schedule.
This past week, I did three interviews to promote my book. It was an unsettling experience. I know people think it must be awesome to be in the limelight. However, I find it rather disconcerting and not particularly pleasant.
Why? Well, it causes me to talk a walk down memory lane. And that little jaunt can be difficult. Two of the reporters have been in the business for awhile and know how to put a subject at ease. But the third young lady was a cub reporter. She had no tact at all.
I'm a pretty tough woman. Not too many things make me cry. But I cried this week. The young reporter asked me such personal questions. I actually faltered a couple of times.
I know a few authors and they have all told me to buckle up and enjoy the ride. Once your book publishes life is never quite the same. I'm learning that my friends and I have just gotten on this ride!
I can hear the clicking of the roller coaster as it rises on the track. I remember the feeling of dread and excitement that gathers as you see the top of that first hill rising before you. Right now, I'm in the cold terror phase. Soon I hope to be in the screaming with excitement moments...... I'll let you know.
